Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in the Context of Globalization: Ideals, Realities, and Contemporary Challenges

Dr. Pramod Kumar Dash, Miss Ankita Sharma

The present paper delves into the multifaceted challenges faced by the Upanishadic principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, translated as “The World as One Family” which advocates the ideals of global unity. It examines the persistent hierarchies and inequalities within societies and nations, exacerbated by globalization. The political discourse surrounding Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is explored through historical and contemporary lenses, highlighting its flexible use by Indian leaders to navigate varying political landscapes. The paper contrasts the spiritual unity inherent in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam with the economically driven concept of the global village which criticizes the homogenization of cultures. Also, the environmental impact of human-centric progress and the erosion of traditional ideologies in the postmodern era are analyzed. Ultimately, the paper questions the genuine realization of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam amidst political rhetoric and global inequalities, advocating for a re-evaluation of humanity's interconnectedness with the world.
